It was a relief to be back outside, the feeling of being watched falling away as we moved further from the pub, toward the busier part of the bazaar.

“Do you believe him?” I asked as I trotted alongside Nox. He was walking fast, which I guessed was because he was pissed.

“Annoyingly, yes. The man is an asshole, but I don’t think he is lying.”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought too. What did he mean by borders? And me not wanting my scent taken?”

“The three packs have borders, which they don’t cross. And if a wolf takes your scent he will be able to find you easily.”

I shuddered. “I don’t want him, or anyone else in that room, to be able to find me.”

Nox stopped striding along the cobbles and turned to me. “I will remove any mark any wolf ever puts on you,” he growled.

“I, erm, appreciate that,” I told him, unsure what else to say.

He just nodded and resumed his stride.

He was silent the rest of the way back to the car, and I laid a hand on his arm once we joined the line of traffic that led back to the office.

“You okay?”

“I wish it was him. I am annoyed that it isn’t.” Shadows were swimming in his eyes.

“I know what you mean. Maybe it was a hellhound then?”

“I thought about that. There was no evidence of fire or burning at Alex’s flat. There would have been, if it was a hellhound attack.”

“Huh. Good point.”

Back to square one on Alex’s murder, then.

Nox huffed out an angry breath. “We will review all footage anywhere near Sloth’s shithole spa around the time he lost the page.”

“Okay. Does that mean you’re going to come and help me out in the research department? My office isn’t as nice as yours.” I said the words teasingly, trying to ease his temper.

It worked. The shadows skittered away as he focused on me. “Then we will get you a nicer office.”

I laughed. “It will be nicer for having you in it.”

Desire flashed over his features. “I would have you in a heartbeat,” he rumbled.

“That’s not what I meant,” I said, but the words were hollow. A surge of frustration welled up in me and we fell quiet.

“Do you want to stay with me tonight?” he asked, as the enormous walkie-talkie building finally came into view. “In the guest room, of course. I don’t think it is safe for you to be alone until we find out why the hellhound attacked.”

“We may have to sit ten feet apart, and ban certain words,” I said.

“Certain words?”

“Yes. The ones that make my insides do funny things. Don’t pretend you don’t say them like that on purpose.”

“Words like temptation?” he said, slowly and deliciously.

“Yes. Words exactly like that,” I said, reaching out and punching him in the arm.

“Fine. I won’t say anything like temptation.”

“Seriously? Stop saying it!”

He smiled wickedly at me as the car pulled up to the curb. “You may have to bring Monopoly.”
